Sea Aster Bee

Colletes halophilus is one of the rarest of our small saltmarsh animals and has benefitted from the habitat re-created here in 2011. These are solitary bees that nest in the ground and their nesting sites may be subject to occasional inundation by the sea. They can be found from mid-August to October on their main food plant Sea Aster.

Sea Aster looks similar to Michaelmas Daisy and grows on the upper part of the saltmarsh where the tall stems keep the large flowers above the water.
