We have sadly become aware of a number of dead birds at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, with avian botulism suspected as the cause.
Avian botulism is caused by a naturally occurring toxin that can appear in warmer weather. Dogs can become seriously ill if they eat an infected bird or drink in contaminated water.
Recent hot and dry conditions have caused water levels to fall significantly, creating conditions in which the toxin can develop. Similar incidents have been reported in other areas of the UK.
Help protect local wildlife
* Keep dogs on a lead at all times
* Do not allow dogs to enter the water
* Avoid contact with water
* Never touch sick, injured or dead animals
Large numbers of birds may be affected. Outbreaks can last for several weeks and may recur. Affected birds will lose movement of their wings and legs and will be unable to walk or fly away.
