The Discovery Centre art exhibition is run by volunteers Morgan and Peter from the Avocet Gallery. This month, they're showcasing the work of local artist Catherine Farr, whose art has sustainability at its core. Catherine only uses upcycled, donated or found materials to make her work. The exhibition pieces have been made using a mixture of papers, paint, pencil and more.
Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is a favourite place of hers. When seeking inspiration, Catherine sits in a hide and listens to the sounds, she then makes studies and writes poetry whilst watching the wildlife. Once back at the studio, Catherine makes larger pieces to capture the feel of the reserve.
We asked Catherine a few questions to get to know more about her work. Here's what she said:
Tell us a bit about yourself
I am an artist, gardener, educator and environmentalist who lives in Hastings. My work is about places that are special to me, those where I can escape the world and relax, 'safe havens'. Rye harbour Nature Reserve is one of those places.
What inspires you most when visiting RHNR?
I'm inspired by the openness of the reserve, the big skies, silver pools and glorious textures, as well as the wonderful wildlife. When I visit I sit in a hide, close my eyes and listen and breathe in the fresh air. Then I write, draw, look.
Why do you use reclaimed materials in your artwork?
I only use upcycled, found or gifted materials in my work as I believe that there is enough 'stuff ' in the world already. People have lots that they throw away. I can give it a new life.
What do you enjoy most about being creative?
I enjoy that feeling of escape when I'm making my work. It's like meditating. It keeps me grounded and calm.
Do you reclaim any materials from beach cleans to make your art?
I have used seaweed and plastic from beach finds at the reserve in one of my pieces in the show, as well as seaweed ink that I made. I am currently exploring making my own inks from plants, I am starting to grow the plants to use as well.
Catherine's art will be on display at the Discovery Centre until Wednesday 6th May.
