What to listen out for on the nature reserve in October.
Wigeon are ducks that spend the winter here in large flocks feeding on water plants, or grazing on grassland. Their whistling calls are a typical Rye Harbour sound.
After a period of reedbed silence while the Cetti's Warblers were moulting and growing new feathers, they are now shouting out their name again!
Water Rail can be heard calling from deep in the reedbed. They are more likely to be heard than seen and their call has been described as sounding like a 'squealing pig'.
